S.O.S. (Save Our Shoes) Tutorial

What do you do when you want to have the comfort of your socks, but you don't want to wear them with your heels or flats? You either don't wear socks or follow this tutorial. This tutorial will show you how to still wear your socks, but without them ruining your outfit!

There are some reasons that should wear socks with all your shoes (excluding flip-flops, ewww) and here they are:

-They make your feet more comfortable

-You still have something on your feet when you take off your shoes, instead of going barefoot in someone's house that doesn't have the cleanest floors (I'm not pointing any fingers)

-People's feet sweat and it might make your shoes stink

-It's more sanitary

Is that enough good reasons? The only reason you shouldn't wear socks with flats or heels is that it ruins your outfit. If that is the case, this tutorial is for you! Let's get started!

To make S.O.S.'s you will need:

Clean socks (more about that later)

Shoes that you want to use as models

Scissors

Sewing machine

Thread for the sewing machine

Pins

Fabric Chalk

Surface to work on

You can use old socks as long as they are clean! I used one that had a small tear in the top and one that was a little bit grassed stained. You know, in case things went wrong...

I only did it with flats, so I don't know if this would work with heels. See how wearing them without socks sometimes made them a little dirty inside?

The scissors, pins, and fabric chalk. I actually ended up using a different fabric chalk. My pin cushion looks a little empty because I have been trying out rolling rosettes! On to the tutorial...

1. Once you have chosen your socks, put them on. Now you take your fabric chalk and go around the shoes! We are using fabric chalk beause it can always be wiped off the shoes. You might have to hold down the shoes to your feet in some places so you can trace better.

I drew over the lines with a paint program on the computer.

2. Cut outside the lines leaving a little space. Take off the socks first! This gives you a sort of built in seam allowance. Oh, and that wet stuff on the cardboard is dried up Fray-Stop. ;-)

See how I didn't cut right on the fabric chalk line?

Here are both the socks cut.

3. Pin down the edges of the sock so that the fabric chalk line is at the edge.

4. Set your machine to a zig-zag for a stretch stitch and sew. You could also use a serger if you have one, but I don't have one and I don't really know how they work. If you have tips please share them!

5. Pin and sew the other sock.

6. There, now you have two finished hems. There is something else you have to do, too! When I tried them on, the toe part fit fine, but the back fell right off my foot because I had cut out the elastic that goes around your ankle.

What you do if you are in the same boat is this. Put the socks on inside out and pull back any excess sock fabric so that it is snug, but still easy enough to get on and off you foot. Try walking (carefully, those are pins in the backs of those socks) and see if they fall off your feet and adjust them if needed. Try and make the amount of pulled back fabric about the same on both.

7. Sew right where the pins were and turn them right side out.

8. Adjust if needed. You're done! Put them on, put on your shoes, and tuck in any extra fabric. I hope you liked this!

Much Difference? In style? No.

In comfort? Yes.

Now go and enjoy them!

You Should Watch This...

Here's the address if you can't see it. I really like this Footzy Rolls commercial! Do peoples high heel's heels really snap off? Only one objection: why would you want dozens of Footzy Rolls in your suticase for traveling? I would carry one pair! ;-) I think if I got a pair of rollable flats they would be from Footzy Rolls (on the actual site, ebay) . What are your thoughts?

I thought this commercial was a little funny because of the girl screaming in pain because of her heels. rollable shoes are a good invention! I think they would be good for me because...

In the winter, the parking lot is really bad at our church and my flats could get ruined, walking in the mall, taking walks outside, and of course, when my shoes are killing me! I would also never walk bare foot on sidewalks or in stores! I actually really don't wear heels! I have one pair of sandles with heels that were passed down. Maybe if I found the right pair that weren't to high...

Also, if you own rollable flats what brand do you have? What are your thoughts on them? Sorry if I have been carrying on a bit about rollable shoes. They're just so cool!

Strap It Up

I'm trying to have more intresting titles! ;-) Anyway, I would love to own a pair of strappy sandals/gladiators. I don't own any and I just think they are so stylish and they would go with a lot of outfits! Here are a few pairs I like:
(Old Navy) I found these on the Old Navy website in May and they don't seem to be on the site anymore. I love the beaded tops!

(Priscilla Embellished Gladiator Sandal American Eagle at Payless) I love everything about these and they have really good reviews! These are probably my favourites.

(Zen Gladiator Sandal Montego Bay Club at Payless) These are so simple and chic! I love the buckles on the gladiator type sandals.

(Source) I like #10 the most.

I really don't like the kinds that go far up your legs:

(Source) Ewwww.

(Source) I'm sorry if any of you like these tall ones, they are just not my personal favourite.

Spring has a lot of pretty pairs. Here is one pair I liked:

(CHASSER at Spring) Love the straps on these.

(Moxie Strappy Flat Sandal Montego Bay Club at Payless) I really like these. They come in gold, purple, and silver! Montego Bay Club seens to have lots of stylish strappy sandals.

I know some of these days now are a little colder now, but I think they would look great maybe in an outfit like this:

Yep, I did a collage in paint from a few different stores. Now, about the outfit. The top I know is a little more than I would pay, but I had a "vision" and this basically fit it. The tank top is to go under, because the top is sheer! I know basically everyone reading this blog will not be able to fit girl's shorts. This ensemble is what I was thinking, I'm not wanting anyone who wants to copy this to think they have to find the exact same belt, or sandals. These are guide lines!

The belt is $12.00, but Suzy Shier has great deals! I went in there with my sister to look around and they have some great 1/2 price items in there, so maybe it would be six dollars... I meant the belt to cinch at the waist, not for the shorts! And those sandals are one pair I mentioned further up in this post. Love those!

I would really like some feed-back on this ensemble. Ugly? Wonderful? Would you have used something different? What are your thoughts on strappy sandals?

Roll Up Your Shoes Again!

Remember when I showed you the "Fabby Rollable Ballet Flats"? I didn't see that there were more brands to choose from! All of them have the same idea, roll up (or fold up your shoes) small, and put them in your handbag. I just thought I would show you the different styles and brands! Oh, and all these brands come in different colours! ;-) All linked to from the CSN website.

What do you think of rollable ballet flats?

Mall Finds

I went to the mall with my family on Saturday and I wanted to show you what I got. First of all, I am not the kind of person who goes to the mall and spends $100.00 on clothes. 2 reasons: I like finding discounts and being frugal and I am not always buying my own clothes because I am only almost 13 AND I have a older and younger sister who need clothes too. My Mom posted on her blog, Dewey's Treehouse about our mall trip. Anyway, back to my mall finds.

I needed a pair of dressier shoes because my other pair were falling apart. Let me tell you, I have size 9 shoe size and sometimes I need a 9, a 9 1/2, or a 9 wide! I needed a 9 wide in flats and there were only about 6 pairs in the shoe store of 9 wide flats! It is in the mall so it's not very big so, I understand them not having very many shoes! I wanted a pair of black flats because they match everything but, I found these gray ones. They had black too but, only in 9 and they had the gray in 9 wide! I really like these.

I could see someone doing a knock-off of these with the jersey knots! These are so comfortable! And we got a discount of 30%! I also went to Old Navy and got a shirt and a tanktop. I like Old Navy and it is a good store but I don't really love Old Navy but, I liked the colour of the shirt. There was a good discount there, it was student/teacher week.

What's that? If you are a student show your student card and if you are a teacher show your teacher I.D.! You don't get I.D. until you are in highschool so, I don't know why they did that. Couldn't they have just given a discount to everyone school aged? Or course I'm only going into 8th grade and I'm homeschooled so, I don't have a student card! My Mom is my teacher (my Dad does do science and math with me) and she has a card from a Provincial Homeschool Group and the cashier said, "What's that?" she took it anyway!

The tanktop that I wore with my t-shirt shrug was a little low for me so I put it on inside out, pinned where the straps should be, sewed, and sewed the loops that were made to the back of the straps. Now it isn't low! Those are my mall finds! What have you found at the mall lately?
